School Poster Contest
The Herkimer County Prevention Council recently hosted a poster contest for Herkimer County middle school students in grades 6-8. As part of this year’s Alcohol and Drugs Fact’s Week students created posters centered around the theme- ‘Shatter the Myths.’ A total of 20 students participated representing the following school districts; Dolgeville, Frankfort-Schuyler, Herkimer, Poland, and Town of Webb.
A Silver Prize of art supplies was awarded to one winner from each participating school district with a Gold Prize being awarded to the overall contest winner. Desirae Stewart from Frankfort-Schuyler and Emily Marquissee from Herkimer tied for this year’s top Gold Prize earning them each two movie tickets to Valley Cinema. Desirae’s design focused on educating the viewer about the facts vs. myths of drug use, and Emily used a clever catchphrase and 3D elements to make her poster stand out.
"This poster contest was a great way for students to express their creativity and become educated about the dangers of substance use in a non-traditional way. The students showed such excitement in creating their posters - they all did an amazing job” said Melissa Snyder, Program Director for the Herkimer County Prevention Council.
All Silver and Gold winning submissions are currently on display in the lobby of Catholic Charities located at 61 West St in Ilion. Additional information can be found by visiting: www.herkimercountyprevention.org or calling (315) 894-8080. A special thank you to Valley Cinema for their donation and to all the participating students and their respective school districts.
